A judge’s ruling this week means Jackson County must follow the Missouri State Tax Commission’s order to cap property value increases at 15% from the controversial 2023 assessment.
Legislator Sean Smith is introducing a measure that would require the county assessor to follow that order and prevent the county from filing an appeal.
Smith said, if approved after a potential vote Monday, the measure would carry the force of law.
He estimates Jackson County property owners are owed about $250 million in overpaid taxes from 2023 and 2024.
“Whether or not we have the money to give them back or have to do future tax credits remains to be seen,” Smith said Tuesday.
