We know a lot of readers won't agree but it's always kinda painful to witness broke-ass plebs cite economic studies they don't really understand and imagine a tax savings by way of dust bowl austerity.
And so, allow us to start with a retort . . .
REJECTING JOBS, CONSTRUCTION & INVESTMENT IS STUPID ECONOMIC POLICY!!!
Consider . . .
The Crossroads said no to the Royals Stadium last year and since that time we've seen an uptick in crime impacting hipsters, fewer visitors and a rougher outlook for nearby small biz.
Of course there's the argument . . .
"Billionaires should pay for it themselves!!!"
Cool.
That's a hypothetical with only one example that doesn't work anywhere else and also ignores every other U.S. town desperate to lure teams into their backyard . . . To be fair, very few people care about the real world implications of rhetorical tough talk in an era dominated by social media stupidity and unquestioned progressive word salad.
But look closely and notice that most of the people espousing DIY arguments are working for dark money groups and special interests funded by . . . COMPETING BILLIONAIRES!!!
Reality: There's no way to get out of the stadium subsidy discussion clean and it's always funny to watch broke-ass people get tricked by one group of hacks over the next.
To wit . . . TKC isn't making endorsement one way or the other . . . Vote however you want . . . This blog merely enjoys the sketchy return on stadiums that's at least somewhat more entertaining than MILLIONS given away to schools that no longer have sports teams worth watching.
But allow us this one prediction . . .
KANSAS CITY & MISSOURI WILL REGRET LOSING PRO-TEAMS!!! AND KANSAS IS EAGERLY LOOKING TO PROFIT FROM THIS MISTAKE BY POISONING THE LOCAL DISCOURSE WITH FALSE FLAG ARGUMENTS!!!
Imagine again . . . Not every Internets comment is completely forthright: SHOCKER!!!
But more importantly . . .
Realize that stadium construction, the jobs and other opportunities it creates along with the publicity of pro-teams are a much better investment than so much other corporate welfare that doesn't garner nearly as much scrutiny.
In fairness, here's the other side of this argument, again based on economics that most locals don't really understand and the foolhardy notion that anybody can really "save" government money . . .
"Proponents of a downtown stadium offer smoke-and-mirrors arguments about all the economic benefits of a downtown stadium. At best, moving the park downtown changes spending—it does not create new spending. Where fans once may have visited liquor and grocery stores on their way to the K, they would now spend those same dollars at the new park and adjacent restaurants and bars.
"That’s not new money for the city or county. Quite the opposite, because current spending goes to places whose sales, income and property taxes support vital public services. But the subsidy regime for a new park would mean taxes collected at or around the new park would be returned to the developer for decades."
