But there are risks that come with vigilantism that aren't often understood by most locals. Well trained gun owners understand that firing their weapon is only last resort in order to protect personal safety and the lives of loved ones. 

Moreover . . . 

In most courtrooms dealing with the aftermath of shootings over property . . . The assailant is rarely "justified" even in the midst of robbery. That might not seem fair but that's simply the way the U.S. criminal justice system works in most cases and with many notable exceptions.

Bottom line: Generally, gun experts advise a great deal of discretion when firing a gun because the legal aftermath is ALWAYS serious, expensive and unpredictable.
