"Achieving the American dream and enjoying a comfortable lifestyle" requires a minimum household income of $102,000 annually across the 50 largest metro areas. The study considered factors such as annual grocery and child care costs and monthly mortgage expenses.

The household income needed to "achieve the American dream" in Kansas City was $116,985, according to the study. That makes it one of the cheapest metros, ranking No. 35.
