As homes go up around the Kansas City area, there are concerns prices could go up, too.

President Donald Trump is considering a steep tariff on Canadian lumber, which comprises about 30% of all lumber used in U.S. home building, including many homes in Kansas City.

But beyond the price, the uncertainty these tariffs have created in the stock market and other parts of the economy will also play a role in homebuilding.

“I don’t think there’s any question that it’s going to have some effect,” said Will Ruder, executive vice president of the Home Builders Association of Greater Kansas City.
