Skeptical Hearne Doubts Johnny Dare Podcast Comeback

Last week there was an outpouring of sympathy for legendary Kansas City DJ Johnny Dare after his show was abruptly cancelled after 32 years on air.

Long after the dust settled . . .

Former Kansas City Star scribe Hearne Christopher offered his two cents on the media future of his far more beloved cowtown MSM counterpart.

For those who might not remember . . . In the 1990s Mr. Christopher was the top gossip columnist in Kansas City and he's the son of a former KC power broker and investment firm owner that, at one time, achieved B-list elite status right under the likes of the Kauffman & Kemper families.

Translation . . . Hearne was KC's favorite "nepo baby" before the term was popular amongst the Gen Z scumbags.

Fun fact, half of that top photo comes from a DUI bust mug shot that earned a surprising bit of local media coverage in the heady daze of 2009 wherein the former scribe still had a long list of enemies waiting to lash out over grievances from mostly forgotten dead-tree media columns.

Full disclosure . . .

More than a decade ago TKC filed quite a few posts for Christopher's blog. It was a fun time and we met a few nice people through it that we wouldn't have encountered otherwise.

As far Hearne Christopher is concerned . . . In fact, he does have an insider perspective here given that he was buddies with the late, great KC comedy club owner Craig Glazer who was the constant target of Johnny Dare's cruelest jokes.

Here's the quote that inspired this post and casts shade on Dare's future . . .

"Does anybody with a brain much larger than a pea that knows how to use a computer or iPhone wanna get down and dirty with ’90s radio humor?"

In fairness to Johnny Dare . . .

That's a cynical take that doesn't give much credit to an incredibly successful broadcaster and his ability to change & adapt to the new media landscape.

The www.TonysKansasCity.com perspective . . .

Johnny Dare has a lot to offer online audiences and this turning point in his career offers an opportunity wherein he could finally expand beyond Kansas City's borders by way of online podcasting & streaming.

Consider . . .

Dare already has a substantial social media following that outpaces anything that Hearne Christopher or most local media outlets have achieved.

Also . . .

It's simply bad form to try and hit somebody when they might be down or imagine that they can't find success where Hearne's blogging adventures were substantial but eventually fell off after a decade of promising his loyal readers a more consistent/interesting effort.

Developing . . .
