Background . . .
Insider tell us that Wick is, in fact, a strong advocate for trans & LGBT rights in Jeff City. However, his ability to help with other legislation and priorities is NIL . . . For progressive Kansas City residents that might be acceptable but, in fairness, there are a lot of other things this town needs to accomplish in addition to OR other then a super-minority fight over trans rights.
Nevertheless . . .
Wick won a VERY close vote and those who helped his victory likely understood that, for better or worse, the local "pansexual" "trans" & "nonbinary" leader would focus on some of the more controversial legislation regarding gender-identity coming out of Jeff City.
Amongst the ladies of the Democratic Party super-minority, Wick has been embraced and there are no shortage of happy selfies . . . The word from local lobbyists & other politicos more focused on economic development has been a bit more critical whilst attempting to stay respectful in reminding KC leaders about their dearth of Jeff City influence.
Translation: Like it or not Missouri Democrats seem to be doubling down on trans rights as a major part of their agenda . . . Despite polling AND election returns.
And none of this has anything personal to do with Wick who is actually a really nice person who has always been cool to TKC AND is on amicable terms with even his fiercest opposition.
Here's a recent spotlight for the new KC State Rep. before KCUR writes him a 2,000 word love letter:
Kansas City Democratic Rep. Wick Thomas is the first openly transgender lawmaker in Missouri. Although it’s their first year as an elected lawmaker, it’s not their first time in Jefferson City. That came when they were just a teen who was being bullied for their sexual identity.
“Not knowing where else to turn, I took it to the state capitol,” Thomas said. “I couldn’t find any adults here either that would take seriously a threat against so many students.”
