"Whereas Americans in Madison’s time gleaned political information from neighbors and local newspapers, substantially all political information is now delivered through screens. This hands tremendous power to individuals who control the content of the screens.

"Those individuals include Musk, who controls Twitter/X, and Zuckerberg, who controls Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp. Purporting to act in the name of free speech, both have rescinded their platforms’ previous policies concerning fact checking and curbing misinformation. As a result, Facebook and Instagram are increasingly conduits for political manipulation, and Musk personally reaches millions of subscribers many times a day with what amounts to unrestrained propaganda."
