TKC Double Take: Watch Jackson County Fight For Zero Fare

Yesterday we reported this ruckus at the Courthouse but the video that activists are posting says a lot more than even the most vivid description.

Again, the context is simple . . .

THE JACKSON COUNTY LEGISLATURE WILL NOT PROPOSE ANY ZERO FARE TRANSIT TAX!!!

It's not just a pipe dream . . . But a basic misunderstanding of how the County government works.

Again . . . KCMO makes the vast majority of decisions on KCATA budgeting.

Also . . .

The County hasn't had much luck passing new taxes for the past two years.

And yet . . .

These protesters persist and the idea of Zero Fare seems to be willing to go down fighting.

Also . . .

Sorry to be so cynical but . . .

It's also worth considering that KCMO politicos like Mayor Q want to spread the blame around when they're INEVITABLY forced to cancel "Zero Fare" free rides.

As always . . .

We want to be fair and the activists should have the last word in this post before we turn it over to commenters . . . Here's what protesters had to say for themselves . . .

"The Jackson County Legislature showed they refuse to act to fund buses and make sure the service cuts stop. Our members showed up and disrupted proceedings, voicing to the legislators that bus riders can’t wait for them to take action.

" 'While you bicker up there there are thousands of Kansas Citians who are waiting for better buses now!' - Sunrise Movement KC member Erica

"The legislature made it clear today that they will not even discuss a resolution to solve the transit crisis in Kansas City, let alone vote to pass one. Instead of unanimously coming together to provide frequent and reliable buses to their constituents they’d rather unanimously vote on recognizing the Chiefs’ AFC win.

"We will not give up on Better Buses for KC. We deserve a transit system that works for all of us, and we’re fired up to fight for it!"
