Stove top sadness hits a local apartment complex this morning . . . And whilst we don't usually feature house fire stories . . . This one has garnered a great deal of coverage from local outlets and reminds us all to be careful cooking our Winter comfort food.

"According to the Kansas City Fire Department, crews responded to a fire at Independence Ridge apartments around 6:00 a.m. Wednesday.
"Eric Michael from the Independence Fire Department said the fire started in a unit kitchen from an unattended pan on the stove. The unit was on the third floor."

"In all, six people were evacuated and Independence Fire Chief Jimmy Walker reiterated there are still no known injuries at this time, but the entire building is not reachable due to severe damage.
"He also confirmed that there were functional smoke detectors in the apartments.
"Red Cross is on scene and was told to be prepared to assist up to 23 units. Firefighters from several neighboring cities assisted Independence with the fire."

Two adults and two children, ages 3 and 8, perished in the blaze that destroyed one building at the Indy Ridge Apartments in the 19000 block of East 37th Terrace, north of the Independence Commons shopping center, Walker said.
