KCPD Chief Promises 'Hotspot' Patrols Amid Restaurant Crime Wave

A good part of today's police board meeting was dedicated to the recent crime-spree that ruined Restaurant Week 2025 and makes it clear that so much anti-crime talk might not be taking hold on local streets.

Here's the latest pledge . . .

KCPD Chief Stacey Graves said property crime is a volume crime, which means the people committing the crime tend to commit a lot of crimes. She said officers will take a targeted approach in Kansas City’s Westside.

Graves also mentioned the recent stretch of crimes is a similar trend seen in other parts of the city like the River Market, Waldo or Brookside.

“It appears we have a pattern right now regionally where we have people breaking into businesses and we will identify them, we will arrest them and we will submit charges,” Graves said.

Both Graves and Kansas City Mayor Quinton Lucas agreed to work closely with the Jackson County Prosecutor’s Office and come up with harsher punishments for repeat offenders.

Starting Sunday, Jan. 19, there will be a proactive squad of one sergeant and six officers on patrol in “hotspot areas” like Kansas City’s Westside.
