"When, however, something or someone makes genuine relationships impossible and prevents people from enjoying a flourishing life, it needs to be resisted -- even (and especially) if that blockage is coming from religion itself (or at least from groups that say they represent religion).

"That is why across history people have advocated racial and gender equality of opportunity and why they have worked against efforts to prevent such equality."
