We're still gathering deets on this late night local violent episode.
What we know for certain is that the homicide problem persists even in the coldest part of the year and that doesn't bode well moving forward.
For now, here are the basics . . . On gunfire near the parking lot of the Phillips 66 gas station. . .
Homicide 4800 blk of Independence Ave
This evening, just before 9:00 PM, officers were dispatched to the 4800 block of Independence Avenue on a reported shooting.
As officers arrived they were directed inside the convenience store. There they located an adult male victim suffering from gunshot wounds. Officers began performing lifesaving measures and ordered emergency medical personnel to the scene. EMS transported the victim to a local hospital where he was pronounced deceased a short time later.
This is being investigated as a homicide. Preliminary investigation revealed there was an altercation between two individuals inside of the store prior to shots being fired. Detectives and crime scene investigators are on scene interviewing witnesses and processing any available physical evidence.
If anyone has any information they are asked to contact Homicide detectives directly at 816-234-5043 or the TIPS Hotline anonymously at 816-474-TIPS. There is a reward of up to $25,000 for information submitted anonymously to the TIPS hotline.
We are committed to assisting victims of violent crimes through use of Missouri’s Protection Program for Victims/Witnesses of Violent Crime. Funding for temporary, or even permanent relocation, may be available but is subject to pre-approval by the State’s administering agency.
We are working with Partners for Peace in all our homicide investigations to monitor risks for retaliation and provide social services to affected residents.
