"High ankle sprains commonly occur with twisting or rotation — that is, when the foot is planted and turned in relation to the leg. The injury involves damage to the syndesmosis, which are the high ankle ligaments connecting the two lower leg bones: the fibula and the tibia.

"As with all ligamentous injuries, once a player suffers an injury, they are prone to recurrence in the future. This is the same ankle Mahomes injured in 2022.

"A high ankle sprain will commonly sideline a player for several weeks. But as Mahomes has previously shown, he can play (and play effectively) with this injury on short notice."
