About ten years ago, local leaders imagined that Kansas City would become the main hub of "Silicon Prairie" and turn into a Midwest a destination for software developers, venture capitalist and tech culture . . . Obviously that never happened.
Instead . . .
Kansas City has garnered a bit of luck as a convenient location for server farms.
It's not glamorous work, there aren't as many jobs associated with the new ventures and there is a significant environmental impact . . . But having a niche is better than nothing.
Here's the local angle . . .
"The data center, owned by Edged Energy, sits on a 50-acre site of previously undeveloped land off of Missouri Highway 210 and N. Arlington Avenue in northeast Kansas City, Missouri.
"The company built a two-story 124,000 square-foot building on the site that will be home to an 18-megawatt data center. Engineering and construction firm Burns & McDonnell built the facility."
