A spirited response to end-of-year happy talk emerges from a former ally and deserves attention.
Reality . . .
Harsh criticism from NextGen local progressive leaders reveals that Kansas City Mayor Q risks losing one his last remaining constituencies.
Moreover . . . For most dudes, a keyword pulled from this presser is one of the last terms that still sparks tempers and holds meaning despite the jaded online discourse.
And so we ask . . .
DID JUSTICE HORN GO TOO FAR BY CALLING MAYOR Q "COWARD" IN HIS LATEST PRESSER?!?!
Here's the note sent to local media . . . And a link to recently posted to socials . . .
Former Chair and City Commissioner Pens Letter Condemning Mayor Quinton Lucas On Human Rights
Fmr. Chair of the City of Kansas City’s LGBTQ Commission, Justice Horn has released a statement following Kansas City Mayor, Quinton Lucas’ Week in Review Interview.
KANSAS CITY, MO. (December 29, 2024) – Former Chair of the City of Kansas City’s LGBTQ Commission, Justice Horn has released a statement following Kansas City Mayor, Quinton Lucas’ Week in Review Interview:
“Having worked on his first mayoral campaign, worked as an advisor to the city’s climate plan, served as a City Commissioner, and later chaired the City of Kansas City’s LGBTQ Commission, I can say this with conviction—Quinton Lucas is a coward.
We’re moving towards unprecedented times and in scary times, people look to their leaders to offer hope and reassurance. The Trump Administrations and Project 2025 will target many of the people who call the Kansas City region home—and the Mayor’s focus is infrastructure and not the rights of his people.
Women fear for their safety, Trans individuals are uncertain about access to life-saving care, the Black communities face the risk of further rights being stripped away, and the Hispanic community lives in constant fear of family separation through deportation—yet the mayor’s priority remains focused on infrastructure.
Not only is this deeply insensitive, but it will be remembered as a failure to rise to the moment. There are other mayors stepping up, especially those who lead with values, standing firm to say, "This is who I am, and this is what our community stands for." But to lead with integrity, you must first have values.
I remain hopeful, though, because of the strength and resilience of our civic groups, nonprofits, activists, and communities who refuse to stay silent while our rights are trampled. At least we now know where our mayor stands—sitting with our oppressors while this is happening.
The advantage of being in my 20s is that I have time—and I’ll outlast many of those currently in power. I’m confident that history will harshly judge Quinton Lucas for his cowardice, especially when the community turned to him for leadership during one of the most uncertain and frightening times for so many folks who call our great community home.”
