Today Kansas City's "nonpartisan" Mayor offered an array of decidedly progressive Democratic Party endorsements.
Thanks to BEST & BRIGHTEST TKC READERS, we want to share some of the highlights that stand out to us . . .
A declaration on the presidential contest & statewide partisan support is how the message starts . . .
"Last week, in addition to sharing a sample ballot, I promised more thoughts on issues for those who haven't voted. Here we go:
"President - Kamala Harris /All Candidates - Vote Democratic
"For the freedom of the women in your life, for respect of all Americans, for economic stability, more jobs, and higher pay for the middle and working class, and allegiance to our Constitution and our elections, the choice is clear for Harris/Walz.
"In our state, Democratic candidates support investing in healthcare for children and families; higher pay for teachers; and expanded opportunity for all. The Republican Party has been captured by Trumpian falsehoods about elections and cruelty toward others almost daily. It is a never a mistake to vote for decency."
This note on Missouri sports betting has strange intro . . .
"Amendment 2 - Sports Betting (YES)
Sports betting is here already, so at its core, the question is whether you prefer Missourians bet by driving across state lines, risky bet placing online through off shore groups, or using criminal elements to place bets, or would we rather have a well regulated, Missouri tax-generating legal system for sports betting like 7 of the 8 states, including Kansas, which surround us. To me, the answer here is an easy yes.
"While I too pray for all sinners (myself included), individuals have freedom to entertain themselves by many means in Missouri. They can consume marijuana, drink alcohol, go to a casino, and more. Looking at the experience of Kansas and others, I fear no parade of horribles with legal sports betting in our state and instead see more revenues to support Missouri interests. VOTE YES."
The Mayor's take on the controversial Missouri's abortion Amendment supports "abortion is healthcare" argumentation . . .
"Amendment 3 - Abortion and Reproductive Healthcare Rights (YES)
Vital healthcare choice should be left to Missouri women and families and their healthcare providers, not to politicians. A vote yes restores rights many have known for a lifetime until stripped by an activist court and our legislature. A vote no maintains not just a draconian limit on abortion access, but also puts birth control, IVF, and all forms of reproductive care in Missouri at risk. For women and our families, VOTE YES."
The last issue that we wanted to highlight is the ballot choice that has sparked concern and opposition from many small biz owners in Kansas City . . .
"MO Proposition A - Minimum Wage and Paid Sick Leave (YES)
Missouri for too long has trafficked in poverty wages. This would ultimately increase the minimum wage to $15/hour, in alignment with what already is minimum wage for Kansas City positions. It also would support paid sick leave for all Missouri workers. You can work someone hard, but you should treat them with dignity and respect. Fair pay is but one part, I emphatically support a yes vote, and states that have higher minimum wages, still have great business environments, often better schools and healthcare systems, and help build better lives for all. Missouri can do better. VOTE YES."
