Kansas City 2024 Homicide #126: Woman Shot Dead Inside Car

Tonight we finish our look at local news with more tragedy and another glimpse at escalating violence this year despite some progress in reducing the homicide count overall.

Here's the first report . . .

Homicide 34th and Garfield

This evening, right around 8:15 PM officers were dispatched to the intersection of E. 34th St. and Garfield Avenue on a reported shot spotter activation. While officers were enroute to the original call for service an additional call came in of a reported shooting in the same area.

Upon arrival, officers located EMS personnel assisting an adult female victim out of a vehicle who was suffering from apparent gunshot trauma. She was immediately transferred to an area where she succumbed to her injuries and was declared deceased.

Preliminary investigation indicates the gunshots came from outside of the vehicle, striking the victim who was inside of a vehicle. We do not currently have a person of interest identified and no one is in custody.

Homicide detectives and crime scene personnel have responded to the scene to begin collecting evidence and gathering witness statements. This is being investigated as a homicide and is ongoing at this time.

If anyone was in or around the area at this time and saw or heard anything they are asked to contact Homicide detectives directly at 816-234-5043 or the TIPS Hotline anonymously at 816-474-TIPS there is a reward of up to $25,000 for information submitted anonymously to the TIPS hotline.

We are committed to assisting victims of violent crimes through use of Missouri’s Protection Program for Victims/Witnesses of Violent Crime. Funding for temporary, or even permanent relocation, may be available but is subject to pre-approval by the State’s administering agency.

We are working with Partners for Peace in all our homicide investigations to monitor risks for retaliation and provide social services to affected residents.
