Kansas City South Loop Still Short On Cash

A quick update on an ambitious plan for downtown reveals that there's still not enough money for the grandiose project.

"The holdup, of course, has been paying for a project estimated to cost roughly $217 million. The city received the promise of $43.6 million from Missouri, a $28.6 million federal earmark, $10 million from the city and $5 million in state tax credits. The project also had private pledges totaling $22.5 million as of July.

"But the city whiffed on two attempts to get U.S. Department of Transportation grants. After missing out on one in March, the city was to apply for a line of credit of as much as $65 million through the federal Transportation Infrastructure Finance and Innovation Act program."
