Racially Charged Campaign Dominates Late Jackson County Prosecutor Primary

For the record . . .

We think Melesa Johnson might be the favorite going into this contest even if polling information is limited.

However, it's our hope that voters and supporters of Ms. Johnson base their decision on her qualifications and impressive career track record rather than racially charged rhetoric.

Nevertheless . . . . This is fact . . .

More than any other candidate in this contest, supporters of Melesa Johnson have hinged their arguments on racially charged argumentation.

Stephanie Burton has disavowed racial politicking in her campaign.

The only white dude in the contest, John Gromowsky has patiently answered questions and denied racially charged allegations against him.

Republican contender Attorney Tracey Chappell has not made the topic of race any part of her campaign.

Again . . .

No matter how readers might feel about the topic, it is FACT that last minute racially charge allegations dominate the last minute statements from supporters of Ms. Johnson.

Here is a top story that most TV news outlets are downplaying but the newspaper & KSHB have highlighted:

“The hiding of almost $300,000 of campaign funds, hiding where that money is coming from,” said Katheryn Shields, former Jackson County executive.

A Missouri Ethics Commission report shows the political action committee Stop Gun Violence Now has spent more than $333,000 in the county prosecutor race.

However, Shields said the group only lists the source of around $35,000 of that money.

“This PAC has spent substantial amounts in support of John Gromowsky and Burton, evidently using Burton to split the Black vote,” said Gwendolyn Grant, president and CEO of the Urban League of Greater Kansas City.
