This Summer City Hall has spent most of their time tinkering with traffic.
To wit . . .
ASK AROUND: THE STATED GOAL IS TO SLOW TRAFFIC DOWN!!!
So, when stuck in traffic . . . Our Mayor & council are likely directly responsible one way or another.
Accordingly . . . Here's the latest update, a peek at methodology and the first round of impediments thrown at speedy drivers . . .
On Thursday, July 25, 2024, the Kansas City Council approved the installation. This is in addition to the 300 Vision Zero projects already completed or in progress. This initiative will construct two (2) speed humps at approximately 50 locations, addressing longstanding traffic safety concerns and utilizing data-driven methodologies for selection and implementation.
Speed humps require vehicles to travel at significantly lower speeds to reduce jarring.
Initiated in response to traffic calming requests submitted through the City’s 311 system, the speed hump project underscores a commitment to equitable distribution and effective deployment of traffic calming measures aligned with eliminating traffic fatalities and serious injuries.
The speed hump implementation plan aligns installation with the Street Preservation Program, creating significant cost savings of tax dollars by leveraging resurfacing funds. The installation of the selected speed hump locations will begin immediately in coordination with the resurfacing schedule, allowing staff to complete significantly more projects citywide.
How are speed hump locations selected?
Speed hump candidates were evaluated based on varying factors, including their proximity to the High Injury Network and schools and their classification within the Department of Transportation Equitable Transportation Community (DOT ETC). This multi-faceted approach addresses both immediate safety concerns and long-term community impact. The distribution of speed humps among City Council Districts was carefully determined to reflect community needs, traffic safety priorities, and equitable distribution. Based on data from 311 requests between 2021 and 2023, each district's share of requests guided the allocation, ensuring a fair and balanced approach to deployment . . .
The below list of speed hump locations include those approved by City Council on July 25, 2024, and locations approved through a separate process to improve safety around the community.
