Kansas City Chiefs 'Hail Mary' Stadium Tax Showdown Starts Today

Another roundup of a last minute effort that MIGHT extend the seemingly inevitable move to "Tornado Alley" for the Kansas City Chiefs . . . 

The Jackson County Legislature could put a Chiefs-only sales tax on the November ballot at today’s meeting. If the legislature supports the ballot question, the move indicates a willingness to focus on the Kansas City Chiefs and a shift away from negotiating with the Royals — for now.

The quarter-cent tax would go into effect in October 2031 — after the current 3/8th-cent sales tax ends. This tax would fund improvements for Arrowhead Stadium and the Truman Sports Complex and would not include Kauffman Stadium. It’s a compromise 1st District Legislator Manny Abarca IV, who sponsored the measure, hopes will ease voters’ concerns about funding a new Royals ballpark.

Jackson Co. could put Chiefs-only sales tax on the ballot to keep stadium talks alive

If the Jackson County Legislature puts the proposed sales tax on the ballot, it would cost half of the current tax. It would only support the Chiefs in a play to keep the team in Missouri, leaving negotiations with the Royals to Kansas City and Missouri.
