Kansas City 2024 Primary Winners & Losers

And so, Kansas City achieved another milestone in Democracy and our not-so-humble blog community is tasked with interpreting the results and sifting through all of the partisan spin.

Accordingly . . .

CHECK OUR TKC PRIMARY WINNERS & LOSERS 2024!!!

Of course both parties are claiming overwhelming victories but we find room for skepticism of EVERYBODY in this quick collection that hopefully sparks more conversation.

Let's start on the bright side . . .

THE WINNERS

Kansas City "Kingmaker" Mayor Q

In all likelihood, the new prosecutor will be a political protégé of Mayor Q and this demonstrates his ability to put candidates into office through his endorsement, connections and development. This is a skill that most Mayors haven't been able to develop and it could prove valuable for the 12th & Oak administration going forward.

GOP Party Establishment

Outsider "conservative" candidates in Missouri & Kansas didn't do very well. MAGA branding was far less effective in the primary and it seems that local imitations of "the Don" weren't appreciated despite so much trolling. Instead, mainstream GOP leaders leveraged their connections and cash and proved that party & organization outweighed online bullying.

Campaign Season Moves Social Media

Texting campaigns, spam and e-mail lists were crafted with far more care than old school mailers and old fashioned human  contact.

The future of local politics is on your phone for those who can't figure out how to opt out of so many messages.

And now . . .

THE LOSERS

Trolling Didn't Work This Primary Season

Missouri State Senator Bil Eigel earned headline, nationwide rebuke and social media love but NONE OF THAT TRANSLATED INTO VOTES.

Sure, clowning with short Latinos is all fun and games but in the end it DOESN'T PROVE VERY EFFECTIVE at earning voter support.

In fairness . . . Even on the Democratic Party side . . . Rep. Patty Lewis earned a victory mostly by denouncing the allegedly negative campaigning of Pat Contreras.

Voters Didn't Endorse Already Overcrowded Jails

For better or worse . . . Even in strongly conservative districts . . . Kansas City metro voters don't see the connection to jail space and crime reduction.

The Platte County Jail decision impacts KCMO inasmuch as the lack of enthusiasm for building jails in the Northland is likely to further delay local efforts.

Local Leftists Stay Losing

The Squad lost another member as STL didn't stand up for Rep. Cori Bush. And, generally, it seems like the Democratic Party is attempting to "move to the middle" amid campaign 2024 and ongoing Uni-party support for war in Ukraine & Gaza.

But all of this is merely our hot take on primary night, here at www.TonysKansasCity.com . . .
