Shell Casings Help Crack Cold Case Killing In The Dotte

An important example of local murder suspects tracked down after years of investigation.

Here's a critical passage offering a glimpse into how law enforcement was able to make the case:

After Htoo's death, shell casings found at the scene were submitted to the National Integrated Ballistic Information Network (NIBIN). There were no matches at the time. But, in September 2021, Lenexa Police recovered a gun in a different investigation. Test fire shell casings from that weapon were submitted to NIBIN . . .

A new cold case detective was assigned to the case in May of 2024. Det. Lily Szewc began conducting more interviews and searching what little video footage was left from the night Htoo was killed. In June, there was a breakthrough. Szewc was able to connect a vehicle captured in exterior footage from the scene to Samano, placing him at the crime scene.

On July 11, the Wyandotte County District Attorney's Office officially charged A SUSPECT with felony premeditated murder and aggravated attempted robbery in the death of December Htoo.
