A close call that could have fundamentally changed American Democracy has inspired a moment of pause and prayer in Kansas City.
There are a lot of horrible Internets takes on this topic to consider but tonight we contemplate prayerful messages from local officials.
Kansas City's mayor leads the way . . .
"All of us as Americans and decent humans should be glad to see the former president’s staff reports that he is okay.
"Thank you to the first responders on the scene.
"Having been too close to a shooting recently, I continue to pray for President Trump and all present."
A comment from former Kansas City TV newsman and current Congressman Mark Alford also deserves attention given that he's one of the most strident MAGA supporters in the metro . . .
"Please join me in praying for President Trump and for everyone at today’s rally.
"I hope everyone is alright and that there is swift justice."
Tonight's message from The Kansas City Star was devoutly political but also somewhat reverent . . .
"Trump survived and is apparently fine, though bloodied. We are grateful. A spectator was killed, though, and (as of this writing) two others are reportedly in critical condition. All the victims — including the countless spectators who directly witnessed the horror — have our firmest prayers and our deepest anger at whatever misguided person perpetrated this act. Our prayers should not be just for those victims, but our country."

Area political leaders praying for former President Trump; decry violence in political campaigns
The shooting Saturday of former President Donald Trump brought anger and concern from local political leaders about the angry state of politics in America.
Congressman Mark Alford addresses Trump's return after rally shooting, safety changes
"I truly believe he will be here later at the convention in Milwaukee, possibly on Monday, to talk about what happened and to accept the nomination for President of the United States."
Shots fired at Trump: Please God, let us stop hating one another this much | Opinion
America has been moving toward a moment of ugly political violence for a least a decade. Now, we're praying for our leaders to subtract from the rage instead of adding to it. | Opinion
And all of this inspires our Kansas City playlist on the topics of prayers . . .
Dionne Warwick "I Say A Little Prayer" was performed on The Ed Sullivan Show on January 7, 1968. It's a really nice song about faith & love that hopefully calms down all of the Internets trolls who get a bit too worked up about political news content.
A quick description of a tune that powered TKC's formative years and was played constantly throughout the late 80s: "Living On A Prayer" was a chart-topping hair metal song not only captures the spirit of the 1980s but also the commitment to pull together as a couple, sacrifice what is needed, and face challenges head-on."
A few facts about this pop tribute: "Pray" is a song released in August 1990 by Capitol as the third single from American rapper and dancer MC Hammer's third album, Please Hammer Don't Hurt 'Em (1990). Produced by Hammer, the song heavily samples Prince's 1984 song "When Doves Cry", the first of just a few times that Prince allowed samples of his compositions. The track also interpolates Faith No More's "We Care a Lot". "Pray" became MC Hammer's biggest hit on the US Billboard Hot 100, where it peaked at number two.
Something a bit more current . . . Check the description of an inspiring tune from Sam Smith: "The narrator in this 2017 gospel-inspired pop hit is out of options and has a come-to-Jesus meeting with The Man himself. Having never been religious, the forlorn young man admits that he is naive and unsuccessful in steering his path in life without spiritual guidance."
Finally, because we want to keep this list VERY CHILL. This next track is an American classic that dates back to 1939. The biggest hit version of "My Prayer" was a doo-wop rendition in 1956 by the Platters, whose single release reached number one on the Billboard Top 100 in the summer, and ranked four for the year. This version also went to #1 on both the R&B Airplay and R&B Juke Box chart.
As always, thanks for reading this week and have a safe & fun Saturday night.
