Kansas City Homeless Pet Numbers Spike

There's a spike in couch surfers across the nation and in this cowtown.

For better or worse . . . Some are cuter than others even if all of them leave a bigger mess than anyone realized.

The topic of some council discussion today . . . Here's a peek at the sitch . . .

"Within the first 17 days of the month, the Kansas City Pet Project has taken in a total of 838 animals while 753 have been adopted out, transferred or have gone back to their families . . .

"Advocates indicated that the number of homeless animals who arrive at the KC Pet Project increased 12% over the year before and is up 45% over the past 5 years. Nearly 7,700 dogs and cats have already arrived in the first half of 2024. The shelter is now on track to take in nearly 16,000 animals again this year.

"According to the shelter, owner-relinquished pets have increased by about 62% while stray and lost pets who arrive are up by 92% since it moved to its new Swope Park location in 2020. Particularly, the number of dogs surrendered by families due to housing restrictions and lack of affordable and accessible veterinary care is well above what it was this time last year."
