Maybe more of us need to live in our mom's basement . . . We're all full here at TKC HQ but there really is a move to return to American Multigenerational households which were the norm not so long ago.
Meanwhile, check local progressive arguments that probably just advocate more government subsidy:

Jenny Schuetz, a senior fellow at Brookings Metro, says that changes to zoning laws and more action at the state and federal level could help address Kansas City's housing problems. Schuetz will speak at the Kansas City Public Library this coming Wednesday.
