Crackdown On Racial Slurs At Shawnee Mission Schools Includes Expulsion

For the most part . . .

This policy is good prep for the workplace and life in the public space.

On caveat . . .

How will students LEARN to conduct themselves in public if they get KICKED OUT of school for bad language?!?

So far nobody's asking that question and life lesson here is that, even if we agree with the policy, there's always a risk when public schools play the role of "thought police" in addition to so many other priorities.

Here's a more optimistic view . . .

"First-time offenders using racial slurs in Shawnee Mission schools could face penalties ranging from an office referral, detention or an apology . . . Repeat offenders are subjected to a short-term, out-of-school suspension or even expulsion for more serious, repeated offenses. This new policy has some teeth. Better late than never."

Racial slurs hurt our children. Kudos to Shawnee Mission schools for taking a stand | Opinion

Hate speech can all too easily spill over into violence, as it did when a white boy repeatedly called a Black girl the n-word at SM East last winter. From Toriano Porter:

Shawnee Mission School District adds language about racist slurs to discipline guide after protests

A white male student was caught in a cell phone video assaulting a Black female student and calling her the N-word at Shawnee Mission East high school. Both students were suspended, leading to calls for reforms from students of color.
