Longtime readers of this blog might recollect that early in our blogging tenure we were much more social and actually reached outside of our comfort zone in order to better understand different perspectives.
We hope to return to those days or at least get out of our mom's basement a bit more often as the weather clears up and the time between global disasters is clearly limited.
Accordingly, we start #TBT today by celebrating the life of an online mentor who was one of the very few people to encourage our blogging journey . . .
Legendary writer, journalist, blogger, fashionista, hip-hop influencer and New York raconteur Dallas Penn passed away at the age of 54.
Our brief encounter with a truly generous soul . . .
Sometime around the early 2010s Dallas sent a couple of CD mixtapes our way along with care packages and that exceptionally kind gesture from a fast talking New Yorker made us feel connected to the remarkable explosion in online publishing and a world much bigger than Kansas City. We exchanged a few messages, jokes and even posts that still live in the archives of this blog.
Right now online tributes are pouring out across the hip-hop world in celebration of an author who was universally beloved by anyone who lucky enough to meet him or earn a clever message from the always very busy man.
His legion of fans always wanted him to write his book but he never did and even in his last days he opined about his publishing path and the future.
From our vantage as one of many fans of his work . . .
Dallas was IMMENSELY FUN, brilliant, brash, often raunchy but so very connected to the human condition and the struggle of all people in the contemporary era.
If there is still such a thing as the "online discourse" in the social media era, we're all going to miss his incomparable voice and the light he brought to this world.
