Here's Why Kansas City Youngster Curfew WON'T Work

This one is worth repeating if this cowtown is going to have a serious conversation about Spring/Summer public safety amid record-breaking homicide numbers.

THE KANSAS CITY CURFEWS DON'T WORK BECAUSE DEADLY VIOLENCE IS COMMITTED BY ADULTS!!!

This debate goes back over a decade and started with unattended youngsters inundating The Country Club Plaza and making many suburbanites uncomfortable.

However . . .

Even back then . . .

Youngsters causing trouble were often over 18.

Sure, there are a lot of young people wandering KCMO streets but if we drill down into the homicide stats, the deaths of youngsters are not as common as adults getting killed in gunfights.

Oftentimes . . . When a youngster loses their life . . . It's often the result of a dispute between gunfire wherein the innocent is caught in the crossfire.

Currently . . .

A great deal of local violence accompanies sideshows and disputes betwixt gangs COMPRISED OF ADULTS.

To be clear . . .

TKC isn't arguing against the KCMO curfew . . . It's a great tool to try and keep young people safe and away from the danger on local streets.

We're merely suggesting that the efficacy of curfews as a crime fighting tool hasn't been proven locally or anywhere else.

Nevertheless . . .

Here's the word from police and more reporting . . .

The curfew includes the city's entertainment districts: Country Club Plaza, Westport, 18th and Vine Jazz District, Zona Rosa and downtown KCMO.

"The summer curfew is meant to promote a safe environment for all and focuses only on youth who are unaccompanied by a parent or responsible adult after evening hours," according to a Kansas City, Missouri, police department news release.
