Tracy Thomas Argues Against Short Term Rentals In Shawnee

Right now we share an apt quote from a friend of our TKC blog community, a former council lady and a metro conservative leader . . . Check-it:

Tracy Thomas: Shawnee committee discussion on AirBNB/VRBO discussion on 1/8/24 missed so many points

Shawnee Council is treating this like it's a rare situation.  But it's not.  It's how Big RE, in tandem with the lazy unneighborly investor class, wants to wipe out R1 Single family zoning--for short term profits.

A. by making living on your street littered with out of state or rental cars unliveable, so YOU sell.
B.  By enabling people who are tired of maintaining their home into flipping it to rentals.  Either AirBnB, VRBO or longer term rentals, like LiveHomeRoom.com.
C.  By NOT reporting to the County that homes that were built and taxed as a certain number of bedrooms can expand/convert, but not be reported or re--appraised-- or safety inspected--or taxed appropriately.

Wake up, people!  Represent the voters!  Don't take your staff's--and your inexperienced lawyer's "easy way out".

And don't jeopardize our current lawsuit being appealed re HomeRoomInc.  Because you are inventing --without ANY research, just off the cuff commentary --in the middle of a blizzard--new rules and definitions and allowed uses for on-street parking.  Which is THE first sign of real estate cancer in R1 neighborhoods.

Did anyone research other cities?  How much AirBnB and VRBO require a city short term city occupancy tax or fee PER NIGHT PER PERSON???  You debated an annual FEE eg $250 or $500.  But you're ignoring or walking on the DAILY revenue the city should expect to receive for setting up these el cheapo boutique mini-hotel casitas on every street in Shawnee.
