Today our snarky Kansas City blog community confronts unfinished business to consider regarding existential questions of municipal ethics and virtue.
To wit and leftover from Sunday . . .
LONGTIME LOCAL NEWSMAN BILL TAMMEUS ENDORSES "MORALITY" OF KANSAS CITY SLAVERY REPARATIONS LEGISLATION FROM HIS PERSPECTIVE AS THE LEADING METRO FAITH SCRIBE!!!
Allow us a brief and still related aside . . .
Across the nation media & news outlets are melting down as the industry confronts serious decline amid the rise of social media . . . It turns out people would rather hate-watch friends & family on their phones than engage in politics & civic discourse on any level. Nevertheless, Kansas City's so-called "public" news outlets have served as a refuge for leftover dead-tree scribes from Mr. Tammeus to Mary Sanchez whilst the rest of us have to tap dance for clicks in order to remain afloat. The generous donations of "viewers like you" along with even bigger corporate sponsorship & some taxpayer funding sustain a cartel of progressive scribes who maintain a stranglehold on the local discourse as they approach their 80s . . . Given this situation . . . Maybe so many rubes trolling each other on X/Twitter and calling themselves pundits & analysts might not be such a bad thing.
But I digress . . .
We trust readers to take apart the faith scribe's foray into politics but here's the question that persists:
WHY SHOULD CAMBODIAN & AFGHAN REFUGEES PAY SLAVERY REPARATIONS?!?!
For us . . . This question cuts to the core of sketchy municipal policy.
Never mind that race-based tax codes have proven disastrous throughout recorded history.
Again . . . As as a smart-ass Westsider we will happily comply with mandates for reparations and offer Taco Tuesday coupons to our nearby huants as a way of making amends for alleged complicity in the complex and habitually exploitative history of the Untied States.
However . . .
It seems that communities who have been the very recent victims of admitted war crimes don't really owe any debt for "systemic" guilt ascribed by supporters of slavery reparations and the clunky legislation which only serves to further divide this cowtown.
Mr. Tammeus offers cursory mention of Native-Americans but the reality is that the U.S. is now a mult-cultural landscape with so many people from across the world who can legitimately claim some level of victimization and demand cash settlements . . . Meanwhile, his thinking that money and bad policy will prove effective in "healing" is naive at best and probably downright negligent when it comes to crafting tax codes enforced upon residents.
To be fair, here's the crux of his reasoning and a link to his latest column featured by the Kansas City Public Broadcasting outlet . . .
"Many white people seem not to understand that helping Black Kansas Citians through reparations likely will benefit them, too. Beyond that, a well-thought-out healing response is the moral thing to do based on core teachings about restorative justice from the world’s major religions.
"Helping white people understand how they will gain from reparations and teaching everyone how the need for reparative action has religious roots will be crucial to convincing Kansas Citians to support some kind of compensatory plan."
