Kansas City 2023 Homicide #180: Fatal Shooting Breaks Historic Record

Tonight police are investigating a fatal shooting near the 5200 block of Lyon Ave.

This homicide marks the 180th killing in Kansas City, Missouri so far this year compared to 179 last year.

More importantly . . .

2023 NOW RANKS AS THE BLOODIEST YEAR IN KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI HISTORY!!!

Moreover . . .

The tenure of Mayor Quinton Lucas has seen more homicides than any other period in local recorded history.

As of this writing there are a few "new plans" to reduce the rate of local killing but so far none have met with any significant community, neighborhood or voter support.

Politically . . .

There's an effort to cast blame on the current KCPD Chief for the death toll but she still has a great deal of support from community leaders and only a few voices are attempting to shift blame to her office.

Blame has also been directed against the KCPD Board of Police and the Missouri state governance structure but there's very little political will put forward new legislation . . . ESPECIALLY given that STL's homicide WORSENED when they earned so-called "local control" from Missouri's GOP super-majority.

Finally . . .

Mayor Quinton Lucas has escaped any real culpability for the slaughter that has occurred on his watch which has spanned both of his terms in office.

He won reelection by more than 60 points and was virtually unopposed.

There is no council faction that has challenged his leadership AND recent visits from Biden Administration officials prove that his standing continues to rise within the Democratic Party on a national level.

And all of this is merely to note . . .

There's really no indication that KCMO's homicide & violence will improve in the new year given that local numbers buck national trends that have seen a decline in deadly violence.

Even Chicago has reduced its number of homicides in 2023.

Again . . .

There is little political will in Kansas City to do anything drastic about these numbers and so far we've only seen widespread disinterest in local voting the correlates with the deadly surge of local urban violence.
