Jackson County Stays Losing Property Tax Lawsuit Dismissal Request

Jackson County requested dismissal, but a judge ruled in favor of Independence on Thursday.

"In the wake of continuous failures by Jackson County officials to correct their inconsistent and unfair processes related to the assessment of real property taxes, the Independence City Council has authorized City staff to retain legal counsel to initiate a lawsuit against Jackson County," the city said in a statement.

The lawsuit alleges the county failed to notify property owners of the value increases, requiring property inspections or accounting for new construction.

Last summer, the City of Independence initiated legal action against the county. The City of Blue Springs later joined the lawsuit.
