The latest local killing claims the life of a Latino teen and continues to push Kansas City, Missouri ahead of the record breaking pace of 2020 -- The deadliest year in local recorded history.
Again . . . Unofficially, this is homicide #159 compared to #157 in 2020 and representing a 7% spike over last year's numbers when only 148 killings had been recorded by this date on the 2022 calendar.
Here is the first report . . .
Homicide 6000 block E 13th St.
This evening just before 6pm officers were dispatched to the 6000 block of E 13th St on a reported shooting.
When officers arrived, they located a juvenile teen male lying in the street near a vehicle that had a collided with a light pole.
The juvenile teen was unresponsive and suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. Officers immediately began rendering medical aid until EMS arrived and took over EMS transported the juvenile teen victim to an area hospital where he was later pronounced deceased.
ANOTHER TEEN MALE WAS located nearby suffering from non-life threatening gunshot wounds . . . Transported to an area hospital by EMS.
Preliminary investigation is believed that the vehicle occupied by the victims had been engaged in the exchange of gunfire, with another unknown vehicle in the area.
Homicide detectives and crime scene personnel have responded to begin gathering evidence and collecting witness statements.
We do not have a person of interest in custody at this time. Detectives do not believe there is a threat to the surrounding areas related to this incident at this time.
This scene is being invested as a homicide and it’s considered ongoing at this time.

We are committed to assisting victims of violent crimes through use of Missouri’s Protection Program for Victims/Witnesses of Violent Crime. Funding for temporary, or even permanent relocation, may be available but is subject to pre-approval by the State’s administering agency.
We are working with Partners for Peace in all our homicide investigations to monitor risks for retaliation and provide social services to affected residents.
