Today we'd like to offer our blog community a lesson in how winning municipal campaigns are crafted by civic leaders.
Again . . . For the record . . .
TKC never has & never will endorse any tax.
We're merely throwing this one out there for discussion in hopes of sharing a glimpse behind the scenes of the local discourse.
Accordingly . . . This is a big deal . . .
JACKSON COUNTY PUTS PADDY MAHOMES FRONT & CENTER IN THEIR LATEST "USE TAX" MAILER BLAST!!!
Like it or not . . . This is a power move and there aren't many counties around the metro who can boast a Super Bowl champ on their campaign literature.
Take a peek . . .
The tag line is "pure Kansas City" political persuasion that ties football glory into an election agenda.
Credit where it's due . . .
A vote for higher taxes can put the electorate on the same team as Super Bowl champs . . . Which is much better and cheaper than buying overpriced sports merch.
We've seen the deets before but here's the other side of the mailer . . .
A few things to consider . . .
As far as we know, the claim is correct that most residents won't actually pay the use tax because they're not buying big ticket items.
Meanwhile . . . Opponents of the tax say that it will necessitate rate increases and rising inflation. This argument rightly assumes corporate greedflation is always in effect and looking for another reason to raise prices.
Again . . . On the other side of the equation, proponents argue that Missouri & Independence passed use taxes and the world didn't come to an end.
Something else to consider . . .
There is no organized opposition against the tax . . . There have been a couple of outspoken opponents but no mailers, commercials or even community meetups.
As with all things . . .
The fate of the Jackson County "use tax" will depend on Tuesday voter turnout.
You decide . . .
