Preston Smith has been a valiant tax fighter for years . . . He has tireless dedicated hundreds of hours to helping educate locals and providing media and politicos with important data about the often confusing process.
His work is done for free and we think it's important to acknowledge his efforts.
Today . . . He is organizing JACKSON COUNTY TAXPAYERS in an effort that might save us all a buck and expose the hot mess at the courthouse.
First . . . He shares this note on the situation . . .
"UPDATE ON STATE AUDIT: During this week I traded several emails with Todd Schuler, the Audit Manager at the State Auditor. I was imploring/begging him and his office to expedite whatever analysis could be done to show that few, if any, physical inspections occurred in the 2023 Jackson County assessment. My point was that IF few, or if any, physical inspections did occur, then tens of thousands of county taxpayers would be paying too much to the County when the tax bills come out. With the County opening up the online portals to begin paying bills on Oct 25, if the State Auditor could do the analysis/research to look at this ONE issue, then it could make a huge difference. Under the state law, if no evidence existed for a physical inspection, the County could not increase the assessed value more than 15 percent."
And then . . .
CHECK THIS CALL TO ACTION AND HOW JACKSON COUNTY TAXPAYERS CAN HELP PRESSURE MISSOURI OFFICIALS TO PUSH BACK AN EPIC SPIKE THAT THREATENS TO PUSH PEOPLE OUT OF THEIR HOMES!!!
Here's the word . . .
"With the clocking ticking on the County sending out the tax bills, I am asking ALL OF YOU to email the State Auditor's office, asking them to spend the next few days DETERMINING WHETHER PHYSICAL INSPECTIONS OCCURRED IN THE 2023 JACKSON COUNTY ASSESSMENT. Please also explain why you believe this assessment is inaccurate, unfair, corrupt or whatever testimony you want to share."
Now . . . Here's context and why this is important . . .
"BOTTOM LINE: In 2019, the State Auditor started an audit in June 2019 did not release the audit until January 2021. By then no one cared and it didn't matter. I made this point with Mr. Schuler. It did not matter. I, along with others from our county, met in person in the Auditor's office on Aug 24, provided them many documents, and discussed the importance of moving as fast as possible on this audit to determine early on about the physical inspections. The response that we received was something along the lines, "This is bigger than we thought." We need you all to step up and get involved here. Our emails might not matter at all--they might still stay their course--but we at least have to try. Perhaps State Auditor Scott Fitzpatrick will realize that he still has people left over from the previous auditor and/or are not working to help the people of Jackson County. I believe Mr. Fitzpatrick wants to help the people and wants to do the right thing. We have to make our voices heard past the Deep State inside his office who are slow-walking all this. We have to try and now is the time."
