From behind the paywall . . . We quote a local power player attempting to justify the downtown stadium by imagining that it'll help with the housing crisis.
For the record . . .
BASEBALL STADIUMS HAVE NEVER HELPED AFFORDABLE HOUSING AT ANY POINT IN RECORDED HISTORY!!!
Arguing otherwise ignores the path of every other stadium the MLB has ever built which has only served to raise taxes on locals without providing much in the way of economic impact.
And so, this talking point is more than a bit of a stretch and completely unlikely . . . Nevertheless . . .
Check this pitch for billionaire tax breaks . . .
"You have the opportunity, with putting the ballpark in the East Village, of accelerating (existing mixed-income housing development) throughout that Paseo West corridor, and you can do that because there's a dozen mixed-income developers already working in that space. The city has a goal of adding 5,000 affordable units. ... I can't imagine a developer doing mixed-income residential in those neighborhoods who wouldn't think having a ballpark physically connected to their neighborhood is anything but a green light to do more of that kind of residential development."
