Kansas City 2023 Homicide Count Hits #141 After Deadly South Benton Shooting

We've noticed a slight lull in local violence over the past week but, tragically, that trend was cut short this morning after double gunfire in Westport and updates about another local murder.

So far the homicide count remains about 15% higher than last year and only 2 less than 2020 -- A record breaking year for murder in KCMO.

Here's the latest report:

Homicide 3900 block of South Benton

On 09/18/23 just after 0900AM, officers were dispatched on a reported shooting in the 3900 block of South Benton Ave.

Upon arrival, officers observed multiple parties inside of the residence that were called outside of the home to allow officers to enter and search for any potential victims. Officers located an adult male inside of the front entrance of residence unresponsive and suffering from multiple apparent gunshot wounds.

Officers checked for any signs of life on the gunshot victim and were met with negative results. EMS responded shortly after officers located the victim and declared the male deceased on scene.

Homicide detectives and crime scene personnel have responded to begin gathering evidence and collecting witness statements.

An adult male subject of interest was taken into custody without incident. Detectives are not currently seeking any additional persons  of interest at this time, and do not believe there is a continued threat to the community regarding this incident. The cause leading up to the shooting is unknown at this time.

This incident will be investigated as a homicide and is considered ongoing at this time. Roselyn Temple with KC Mothers in Charge has also responded to assist friends and family of the victim through this difficult time.

We are committed to assisting victims of violent crimes through use of Missouri’s Protection Program for Victims/Witnesses of Violent Crime. Funding for temporary, or even permanent relocation, may be available but is subject to pre-approval by the State’s administering agency.

We are working with Partners for Peace in all our homicide investigations to monitor risks for retaliation and provide social services to affected residents.
