This morning the surge of deadly local violence persists as another instance of fatal gunfire claims its latest victim.
As the end of the year approaches, the current count is now 14% higher than last year's pace wherein KCMO counted only 124 homicides at this date. Again, we notice that the 2023 rate remains very close to 2020 stats wherein KC endured 148 killings at this point in a year that would become the most violent ever recorded.

Homicide 2000 block of Wheeling
On 9/30/23 just before 6 am, officers were dispatched to the 2000 block of Wheeling on a reported shooting.
Upon arrival, officers located an adult male lying in the parking lot of the apartment complex suffering from apparent gunshot wounds. Officers administered life saving measures until EMS arrived on scene. EMS declared the victim deceased on scene.
The circumstances leading up to the homicide are unknown. No one is in custody at this time. We have no reason to believe there is an immediate risk to the public.
Homicide detectives and Crime Scene Personnel have responded to the scene. They will be processing the scene to recover any evidence and speaking to any potential witnesses.

There is a reward of up to $25,000 for information provided to TIPS which leads to an arrest in the case.
We are committed to assisting victims of violent crimes through use of Missouri’s Protection Program for Victims/Witnesses of Violent Crime. Funding for temporary, or even permanent relocation, may be available but is subject to pre-approval by the State’s administering agency.
We are working with Partners for Peace in all our homicide investigations to monitor risks for retaliation and provide social services to affected residents.
