Sorry for this repeat of facts that we all know . . . But this bit of local history is too important to forget:
Remember that in 2020, the Country Club Plaza found itself the midst of a social justice riot/uprising as "Black Lives Matter" activists conducted "mostly peaceful" protests amid outrage over the murder of George Floyd.
The ruckus didn't really accomplish much besides burning a cop car, igniting an SUV that belonged to a TV news station and tragically an innocent guy was killed during the hot mess.
Meanwhile,Mayor Q spoke extensively with the crowd. He led protests, joined them and symbolically knelt amongst followers . . . AND THEN he chanted "no justice, no peace" amongst anti-police activists in a demonstration that extended into the night.
In the aftermath of this protest, as COVID lingered and Amazon.com continued to eat into the American retail market . . . Patrons with cash STILL have yet to return to The Plaza.
In the meantime . . . Potential anchor tenant Nordstrom's pulled out of plans to put their store in this embattled entertainment district and a huge swath of the Plaza remains empty . . . There are also a A TON of empty storefronts.
On the bright side . . . Owners are lowering rent and a few discount places have set up upstart businesses.
At this rate . . .
It's only a matter of time until somebody opens up a Spirit Halloween shop.
Nevertheless . . .
To his credit and in fairness, Mayor Q seems optimistic about The Plaza and now leads the effort to shut down more streets and POSSIBLY take over this entertainment district . . . The market value has plummeted more than 50% since the early part of this century and now a municipal takeover isn't out of the question.
As for the plan to pave over streets . . . That isn't new . . . However, the idea has been repeatedly rejected because nobody can imagine patrons staying for long in the midst constant protest and because this plan will turn The Plaza into the nearest free daycare withing walking distance of Troost.
Accordingly . . .
Here's Mayor Q's latest tweet analysis . . .
"As we keep the conversation going on pedestrianizing some of the Plaza, I appreciate Urban Lab for a rendering of the possibilities for a Nichols Road made for people. Studies show walking spaces lead to higher sales and reduced crime. Look forward to more discussion."
Objectively . . .
We don't want to discourage this idea . . . Turning streets into walkways on the Plaza would be AN EXCELLENT way to prove that one administration single-handedly RUINED Kansas City history as we count down to the next, inevitable riot.
