Kansas City 2023 Homicide #124: Deadly West Plaza Gunfire Erupts

As the we approach the end of Summer, KCMO tragic homicide numbers are starting to take shape. 

The latest local killing marks a 20% spike in deadly altercations year-to-date and we're matching the 2020 pace - The deadliest year in KCMO history.

Today the newspaper is mistakenly reporting that this is a "very quiet" neighborhood and that's just factually incorrect. Truth is . . . West Plaza has been victim to rising urbanism. Back in 2017 neighbors complained about worsening vandalism & trash. But those complaints are typical, what we notice over the years is that there are more interlopers targeting this neighborhood and a few reports of home invasions and robberies have garnered a great deal of attention on apps like NextDoor & Ring.

Today's deadly violence only confirms that West Plaza continues to confront a rising crime trend like the rest of KCMO.

Here's today's first report of deadly gunfire:

Homicide E 47th/Liberty

This afternoon just before 12:00pm, officers were dispatched to the 4600 block of Liberty on a reported Disturbance. While officers were en route the call was updated to a Shooting.

Officers arrived and located a vehicle that had collided with additional unoccupied parked vehicles near the intersection of E 47th St and Liberty Ave. Officers located an adult male victim suffering from apparent gunshot wounds inside a vehicles involved in the collision.

Preliminarily, it is believed shots were fired from outside of the vehicle into the victims vehicle resulting in the vehicle collision.

Detectives and Crime Scene Investigators have responded and are processing the scene for evidence. Detectives will be speaking with any potential witnesses as well to discover what may have led up to the shooting occurring.

An additional crime scene was located a short distance away where an adult male was taken into custody and believed to be the primary person of interest in this case. However, the investigation will continue and is considered ongoing.

Detectives are not seeking any additional persons of interest at this time and are confident there is no continued threat to the community, and surrounding areas, regarding this incident.

We are working with Partners for Peace in all our homicide investigations to monitor risks for retaliation and provide social services to affected residents.

One man is dead after a shooting near the 4600 block of Liberty Avenue. Officers were dispatched just before noon on Saturday on a disturbance call but was quickly updated to a shooting.

Officers were dispatched just before 12:00 p.m. on reports of a disturbance in the 4600 block of Liberty. While en route, officers received word the call was updated to a shooting.

Man killed Saturday after argument in 'very quiet' KC West Plaza neighborhood: police

Just before noon, officers arrived at East 47th Street and Liberty Ave, where they discovered a man suffering from gunshot wounds inside a vehicle. The car had been wrecked.
