This week started with local seniors hopeful about property tax relief from the courthouse only to confront disappointment and vague promises of help sometime in the distant future.
However . . .
Thanks to our TKC blog community we have a bit of perspective that most other news outlets are missing.
The basics . . .
FORMER SCHOOL BOARD MEMBERS DOMINATE JACKSON COUNTY'S LEGISLATURE & THEY'RE HESITANT TO CUT ANY CASH FROM FORMER COLLEAGUES!!!
As always trusted insiders help explain the sitch . . .
"Legislators need to decide if their allegiance is to their school boards or seniors. It's as simple as that."
Pause for a quick bit of background . . .
Jackson County Legislative Chair Daron McGee formerly served as President of the Hickman Mills C-1 School District school board.
Along with her service as a Marine, Megan Marshall was elected to Lee's Summit Board of Education in 2020.
Donna Peyton is a retired employee of the Hickman Mills C-1 School District.
Finally . . .
Manny Abarca formerly served as the Treasurer of the Kansas City Public School Board.
And all of this might help explain why Legislators haven't been more "enthusiastic" about tax relief options for seniors approved by the Missouri General Assembly.
There's also a partisan angle . . . Property tax help for seniors is GOP legislation and Democratic leaning Jackson County seems hesitant to enact any tax break that originated with opposition across the aisle.
Still . . . In the aftermath of property tax assessment crisis, insiders fault the Legislature for their FAIL in even attempting legislation that likely would have been confronted veto from the Exec.
Here's the word . . .
"The schools are taken care of . . . They have been flush with cash for years and it hasn't improved their situation. Meanwhile, you have hundreds of seniors in Jackson County who could lose their homes because of this debacle and the Legislature has decided to nothing rather than risk offending their school board connections. That's unacceptable in a crisis like this . . . Let the school board put a tax increase on the ballot if they need more money . . . What shouldn't happen is that the courthouse sits on their hands while there are tools to provide their constituents desperately needed tax relief."
