Behind the scenes, legislation designed by Missouri State Senator Mike Cierpiot is gaining traction.
The basics . . .
AFTER YEARS OF PROPERTY TAX HEARTBREAK SUFFERED BY JACKSON COUNTY RESIDENTS, THERE'S MOMENTUM TO MAKE AN EPIC CHANGE IN HOW THE COURTHOUSE MANAGES ASSESSMENTS!!!
Check the legislation that's back on the table . . .
SJR 13 - Currently, assessors of all charter counties except for Jackson County are required to be elected officers. This proposed Constitutional amendment, if approved by the voters, removes this exception for Jackson County. Additionally, this amendment adds that assessors shall have any other qualifications as provided by law.
Let's unpack this just a bit . . . Or as best as we can . . .
Missouri Democrats pushed back on this the first time around but a few clauses seem to have satisfied their concerns.
Remember that the courthouse now handles this gig as an appointment and that sparked criticism from residents who have suffered property tax hikes as high as 300% in a few instances.
ACCORDING TO INSIDERS, here's the main benefit . . .
"The way the system works now . . . The assessor has to keep a lot of people happy to secure their job . . . Up to an including the Executive . . . WHEREAS an elected position would re-focus priorities on providing better service and accountability to voters."
From courthouse denizens . . .
"This is an anchor punch to (Exec) Frank White's Administration . . . For years they've mishandled assessments but now it's refreshing to see something/anything to address this untenable situation."
