Right now we want to share an important FACT CHECK from our reader community regarding the consequences of free transit.
Here's the word on a recent and surprisingly controversial service change for Ride KC . . .
THANKS TO FREE RIDES, A KANSAS CITY BUS STOP SHUTS DOWN DUE TO WORSENING CONFLICT WITH HOMELESS & FREELOADERS!!!
Update by request:
Remember that pre-pandemic there was a terrifying double shooting at this bus stop and since then insiders have told us that it has become even worse.
To be fair, TKC actually does have compassion for the homeless but the "free ride experiment" is not without problems that impact the working poor.
Leading up to this no-vote decision . . . There wasn't very much outcry to make buses free, most riders simply wanted better service . . . And that worthwhile goal still proves elusive.
This shut down is just one example out of many . . . And possibly a hint that even a nominal fare served to PROTECT BUS RIDERS from vagrants far more than any potential economic hardship it created.
Real talk . . . Incentives and free bus rides could have been accomplished via coupons or passes for people in need rather than opening up the buses to every derelict on the street.
A description of the problem spot from a KICK-ASS TKC TIPSTER whom we trust . . .
"This site has been a problem, even by Walmart standards. Homeless people camped out right next to people waiting for buses and a problem for the McDonalds, Starbucks and all the neighboring businesses."
Whilst we admire the work of Fox4, we must contradict their report.
First Blue Ridge Crossing is, in fact, in KCMO -- Check Google maps if you don't believe us, some of the locale does cross into Independence, MO but this is certainly a prob wherein KC decisions have impacted the situation. Secondly, yes, it's pretty easy to confirm this low-rent bus stop has been a source of trouble that has been worsened by freebie bus rides.
Here's the official line that doesn't really offer much explanation or insight for the ongoing reduction in service following the free bus ride crusade . . .
