Fact is, there's not really much debate at all . . . KCPS & school districts across the metro have said NO. And Kansas City voters have grown execptionally tax weary.
Nevertheless . . .

Pre-K for All? by American Public Square
Tue, March 12, 2019
6:30 PM – 8:00 PM CDT
Mohart Multipurpose Center
3200 Wayne Avenue
Kansas City, MO 64109
The City of Kansas City, Missouri, has proposed a sales tax to fund expanded pre-k education programs. The question will appear on the April 2, 2019, ballot.
"Many agree that pre-k education benefits students and their families and that children who attend high-quality pre-k programs tend to find greater academic and economic success. But some argue that a sales tax is regressive, disproportionately impacting those least able to pay. Others question the constitutionality of the City’s proposal because private sectarian and parochial schools would receive funding from the tax. Additionally, some worry that the plan excludes locally elected boards of education from any significant governance role."
Panelists
Mary Esselman, President & CEO, Operation Breakthrough
Sly James, Mayor, Kansas City, Missouri
Paula Neth, Vice President of Programs, The Family Conservancy

As always we put it to our readers . . .
WHY DO YOU OPPOSE OR SUPPORT THE PRE-K TAX?!?!
You decide . . .
Absolutely reject the tax. There are a lot of good reasons that involve opposition of taxes but if the schools don't want it, I trust their judgement.

ReplyDeleteShould be an interesting clown show. Is anyone going?
ReplyDeleteThe KC Star has failed in their role as the fourth branch of government. That is why this town is so fucked up. Colleen Three Name is a huge part of the problem.
ReplyDeleteNo
ReplyDeleteIt'll be fun to see the Mayor yell at Patrick again. Somebody needs to. As for the plan, I guess this time around the tax increase will only pass by a margin of 10% or more.
ReplyDeleteIf taxpayers flip the bill I'm all for it.
ReplyDeleteTaxation is theft.
ReplyDeleteThe pre_K plan has already been shown to be a scam in several post on TKC. The important thing to remember is only 20 to 25% of the revenue will be going to the schools for the first 3 years and after that everybody knows it will be a slush fund for developers.
ReplyDeleteBottom line the city has no business trying to run the school districts since there are elected people to run the school districts. City hall has a difficult time effectively governing the city.
Should be an interesting spin fest.

KCMO. The endless carnival continues.
23% to the Schools, 77% to "administrative functions", and Sly James keeps control of the funds even after he leaves office?
ReplyDeleteHmmmmm...let me think, okay I've reached a decision.
The only reason not to vote "no" is if "Oh, Hell NO" is on the ballot.

If its like the Airport, 15% of registered voters or 50,000 out 326,000 will pass it! The headline will read: 77% of voters supported the Pre-K Plan.

ReplyDeleteLame
Kindergartens
Pre-K prepares ghetto and trailer park kids for Kindergarten only because it gets them out of the house and away from their uneducated and uneducatable parents for part of the day. However, studies show no lasting effect past the first few school years. So by the third grade or thereabouts, it is not possible to distinguish kids who attended Pre-K from those who didn't based on their academics and behavior. The entire Pre-K proposal is just another liberal wet dream, like the streetcar. It separates taxpayers from their money, creating a political slush fund, but accomplishes nothing.
