TKC TOLD YOU SO!!! $10-MILLION GIFT FOR KANSAS CITY 18TH & VINE JAZZ DISTRICT TAKEN FROM INFRASTRUCTURE FUNDS!!!

East side political leaders brazenly support the always struggling 18th & Vine Jazz entertainment district over growing concern of urban core communities regarding basic infrastructure.

Today, Northeast News offers an important update on a topic that was dismissed by every media outlet in town because it inspires uncomfortable questions about policy priorities and leadership in one of the most economically challenged districts in KCMO.

Remember that we previewed the topic almost two weeks ago as this finale for 18th & Vine earns one of the biggest cash payments of a year that also included shoot outs, leadership turmoil and cutting questions about jazz junkets.

Accordingly . . .

18TH & VINE MIGHT AS WELL BURN ANOTHER $10-MILLION FROM CITY HALL BECAUSE THERE IS NO PLAN TO TURN AROUND THE STRUGGLING JAZZ DISTRICT AND MAKE IT SUSTAINABLE!!!

Money line:

"Councilman Reed took it upon himself to sponsor City Ordinance No. 180825 that re-directs roughly $10,000,000 (that’s ten million dollars for you decimal point-impaired folks playing along at home) from citizen-directed and Public Improvements Advisory Committee (PIAC)-approved infrastructure projects like sidewalks, street maintenance and street lights, and forwarding it to an entertainment district that has already been propped up by over $100 million in taxpayer subsidies over the last twenty or so years with little or no oversight.

"Reed’s ordinance was then approved unanimously by Council."

There's a lot of reasons why this work but weak and irresponsible public policy is the worst part and something that should concern voters first and foremost . . .

- Public input and information about jazz district spending is minimal.

- There is NO NEW PLAN to encourage sustainability.

- Violence inside the district worsened this year after a mass shooting debunked progressive hope for more tourism opportunities.

You decide . . .

Comments

  1. The plan is simple. They get 10 million and then some. When the east side complains about limited funds for sidewalks and public improvements, they just have to keep complaining and they'll get even more money. It's a win win because nobody holds the leaders like Reed accountable.

    1. Hey now, Quinton Lucas obviously voted for this one too so he deserves the blame as well and it's one more reason that he should not be mayor.

    1. ^^^ STFU.

That's funny but misses the point. This is highway robbery and this money is going to be wasted in a way that could destroy one of the only places that is still accessible for the community. It's been on this blog before but Reed also helped push more liquor licenses in the district. There is a lot that needs to be examined here and shouldn't be swept under the rug. With this kind of money we need to see a budget for the district that is open for debate and public viewing. That is not happening and that would be more productive than just blaming the entire community for the actions of one or two leaders.

  3. No more money for Jazz. This nightmare has lasted longer than the jazz age. Think about that.

Don't worry too much about it. It will magically evaporate soon enough.

They steal $10 million and when someone questions it they call them a racist and a Nazi.

  12. I blame all of Kansas City's democrats for this not just one or two leaders! You people knew this would happen when you voted for the go bond. As far as seeing a budget for the district that is open for debate and public viewing....that is laughable, it will never happen and you know it! You have already seen the money wasted, and you want to see a budget, and talk about it???? Suck it up! You voted for this with your eyes wide open, and screwed an entire city!!!!

  13. Tony's teaser makes the point about specifically street lighting. Word! Has anyone noticed that miles of I-70 from basically paseo all the way to the stadiums is totally dark? The streetlights are all out.

And the streets and sidewalks of KC -- my God what a difference ten million could make in improvements.

The sad thing is sometimes there are visitors and even foreign visitors who make their way to 18th and vine. They look around and see the false facades (which are by now getting run down- dilapidated fakes - wrap your mind around that!) and the total lack of energy and commerce around them and think "what a dump!". KC would be better off not promoting 18th & vine bc it is embarrassing.

  14. Hasn't this town sunk enough money into 18th and Vine ? It's unsustainable and as a taxpayer this kind of rerouted money grab is shameful. I take it Jermaine doesn't give a shit about the fucking potholes.

  21. So since it’s tax payer dollars do we get to see the salaries of those who oversee how this money is spent? How many six figure salaries will get handed out to Jermaine reeds friends?

    This is such bullshit

  22. Reed rents an apartment at 2101 Vine St. Of course he wants us taxpayers in other neighborhoods to sink $10 million into his hood. Probably wants to upgrade his 2014 Volvo up to something more respectable also.

    ReplyDelete
  23. That building he lives in, VINE STREET LOFTS LP is property tax exempt also while we are on the subject. City hasn't gotten a dime for a long long long long time on this place.

    ReplyDelete
  24. So bascially the city says Fuck You! if you ask for a couple speed bumps or a stop sign and sends our money to this district with a ribbon bow and shiny wrapping.

    ReplyDelete
  25. It's really sad to watch what passes for "leadership" in the black community constantly looking out for themselves and the little gang of grifter friends, family, and associates, and who are regularly able to roll the KCMO electeds to give them the keys to the city treasury.
There are lots of regular hard-working folks who live on the east side and want nothing more than reasonably safe neighborhoods, decent streets and sidewalks, and maybe even a well-run responsible school district for their kids.
And their "representatives", whether they be neighborhood association poobahs, fake nonprofit "leaders", political insiders, or elected officials, can always be counted on to completely ignore even these most basic of expectations to look out for themselves and each other.
Don't try to blame anyone else.
The fault is clear for all to see.

  26. Jermaine thinks he's going to be mayor? The public is not served by this-- people making money dishonestly include developers, city architecture division and there friends, and nothing will improve.

  36. 18th and Vine is too big to fail- and nor should it!
It would be nice to move $5 Billion from the border wall to 18th and Vine.
With that kind of money they could build prolific housing and Statues and Market places and start to move the Country Club Plaza piece by piece to the Vine area instead of Overland Park.
A nice lateral of the street car could help.
Then let’s sell the Plaza Tennis courts which Parks and Rec owns and use that money to build a Sly Statue where it could be a type of “transformer” and do double duty as a “mediator” between the Vine area and the Plaza.
If any money is left over- create an account at a brokerage and short the KC Star stock and use that fortune for free-WiFi for the area.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Tear it all down and build a new stadium at 18th and Vine. Then run the streetcar down 18th Street from Main St. At least they'll finally make some money off this district that way.

    ReplyDelete
  47. The Kansas City City Council and other City Council's around the country are partially responsible for the rise of the extreme right wing Republican party.
The 3rd District representatives along with the other City Council members who let these folks bully their way funding their pet projects is the best advertisement for the Republican Party today.
How much money is collected for these projects and from where in the City does it come from? A significant majority of the people whose tases are used to fund these pet projects would never vote to support them nor would they go to this area in the city.
