SaveKCI: Airlines Are Now Asking To Be Bumped From KCI Flight

Money line . . .

"The reality is this: The airlines are no longer on board like they were a year ago. It would not surprise me to see them at least ask about revisiting renovating the existing terminals, including the reuse of Terminal A, since the cost of renovation is no longer more than the cost of a new single terminal. In fact, it’s now several hundred million dollars less. Remember, it was cost, not the coolness of a new terminal, that swung the airlines over from renovation to building a new terminal. And in spite of being told that carriers could not grow in the existing terminals, KCI has had remarkable growth recently in new service, new carriers, and new non-stop flights including international service, and a carrier (Allegiant) that the previous Aviation Director said would never come here without a new terminal. Ironically, they are now threatening to leave if we build one."

This is really the best analysis of the airport situation out there right now and it's worth reading in full.

  1. Excellent post.

    Thank you for sharing.

Reminds us that Sly screwed us all when he rammed this one through without offering many solid details to voters!

  2. Sorry Sly, no legacy. Other than that of a stumbling, bumbling liar and thief.

  3. No surprise here.
The airlines are businesses and have to be competently managed and make a profit or they go away.
And the people running them are serious folks who understand how arithmetic works and have some idea of the costs/benefits of decisions.
They're really not used to, and not surprisingly are really tired of, trying to work with amateur incompetents whose idea of financial reality is that the taxpayers are a bottomless pit, so there's no reason to be realistic, responsible, or accountable.
Watching how the largest municipality in the region operates must surely be an eye-opener for any company who might want to do business with them or any corporation that is considering a move here.
    FUBAR on steroids.

  4. The stupidity never ends with sLIE and the clowncil, never, just look at gopher boi, I’m surprised he hasn’t jumped on here yet to defend another failed project of his min squeeze sLIE. It’s coming though, just wait for it, it’ll start out like Tony, I can’t believe and ends with momentum and moving forward, same old shit from another worthless clown

  5. Just about as predicted. Airlines are bailing on this project so the deal with Edgemoor will be made null and void. Surprisingly the white knight, Burns and McDonald, flies in to save the day for Slie and the jokes on Oak. The jokes on Oak bow down to Burns and Mac and provide them a blank check and tell them to do whatever is necessary to get the new airport and save Slie's legacy.

Love the anticipation 6:43 has of gopher boi and his prediction of what gopher boi will say. Definitely spot on. Need to remember gopher boi will say how unfair this post is.

  6. Took someone to airport yesterday. Parked and walked 150 feet to doors. That will never happen with a combined terminal. Yeah, that dark gray fungus that was sprayed on the ceilings doesn't look great, but I wan't there too admire that. It was in and out with no fuss.

  7. 726 is right--the airport that works for travelers. save it.

  8. How to to to remodel cheap?

Go up one story for more space for restaurants, lounge areas, restrooms. Forget shopping, however, as nobody really wants that.

Oh, use some HGTV approved white paint, light fake wood floors, white countertops in the restrooms. Get Jo Gaines to make it cozy. Good PRfor all.

Quickly order 50 tons of donuts, (heavy on the sugar, think coma) and go door to door to voters, say everything's swell/great! Just thought you would enjoy some complimentary donuts!

  10. In case of an airliner accident, or, a tornado, or, just some of KC's famous straight line winds- which terminal would you want to be in? The current ones built like tanks, or, the new one- a new car showroom. ??

that already exists as a mezzanine, you want another.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Actually, they've already done that with restaurants past security. I can't speak for the others but the Delta one is decent but never too busy.

  14. Before the AIRPORT VOTE MANY OF TONYSKANSASCITY READERS KNEW THIS DRAMA WOULD TAKE PLACE. AND with the downturn in the economy in the next five years And interest rates rising. The City will be in trouble .

  16. How to successfully remodel or build new?

So the voters we sold a bill of goods that we need a destination airport rather than "just" function. They propose an airport with a few terminals less than what we are currently operating integrated with a huge under roof shopping mall plaza; call it plaza North, or almost zona rosa.

I say make terminal not currently in operation into the destination shopping plaza with the moving walkways between them. That way shoppers can stay in the shopping area, travelers can do their thing. And if travelers want to shop its 5 minutes away. Win-win all around.

My bet would be the shopping terminal would be mostly empty most of the time, but hey, 25 mil tourists a year are sure to prove me wrong.

    1. ^^^^ It would be THE issue that captures the public’s attention and propels him to the majors office. We are in the age of disruptive politics. So, disrupt!

  18. This is just unbelievable. I’m sure go4KC will accuse us of being Debbie downers against “change”. This feels like something obama would be in charge of. Remember how the health care website cost around 500 million just for the website and it crashed its opening day when kathleen sebelius was on camera for the big show? More more more. More money for the airport, more taxes, more this more that. Plane ticket prices out of kc are going to go through the roof over this. “Oh the airlines will pay for it”. Oh the hell they are! WE will pay for it with higher tickets and more “fees”.

  19. If we didn't have our airport in Iowa I'm sure it would be better but that's not reality (thank the geniuses in the Cunningham era for that decision). If our airport wasn't the drab bunker design it is then our city would be better but that's not reality (and retro rocker is right in his comment above anyway). But we need to deal in reality. KCI functions for the residents of this city and who really cares about what gives image strivers anxiety. Walk away from this new airport turd before it bankrupts us! It will raise fares and chase away carriers.

Can not believe terminal A almost flattened by the edgemoor. I am flabbergasted by jolie justus. how gentle i need to be?

    ReplyDelete
  21. @11:57, conflicting ideas much? Are you upset with the new aeroporte project or in favor of it? 11:42 is pretty clearly against it, you would seem for it, but maybe would just prefer BM does it instead of Edgemoor? To make clear, BM taking over the project would STILL eliminate Terminal A. I think things are completely fine the way they are. The faux service problems (bathrooms in particular) are completely and totally manufactured by the Airport Admin in hopes of getting a new one.

  22. Great link.

Time to think about the airport reasonably.

    Time to start OVER.
