TKC EXCLUSIVE FACT CHECK: ARTSY 'OPEN SPACES' WAS AN EXPENSIVE FAIL AND NOW KANSAS CITY 'JOURNALIST' COWARDS REFUSE TO REPORT IT!!!

I don't know art but I do know for a fact that City Hall and Mayor Sly wasted hundreds of thousands of dollars for weeks worth of artistic exhibits that would have been better spent fixing local infrastructure and improving local services.

Sadly, the standard for the failed festival was incredibly low . . .

KCUR: Kansas City Pulled Off A Huge Citywide Arts Festival — Organizers Say That Alone Is A Success

Money line . . .

"Dan Cameron, told Central Standard host Gina Kaufmann that it was a success by his measure. Cameron said he had experienced “sublime and transcendental” moments through art that made him stop and focus “in a different way on what it means to be a thinking, living, breathing human being in this moment in this place in the world.” He wanted to give other people the same opportunity for those encounters, he said."

Now here are a few things that he didn't say . . .

- City Hall budgets reveal he was allotted $250K for his services.

- The festival projected that it would take in millions . . . City Hall directly funded $500K . . . However, insiders say City Hall is going to have to cover shortfalls that have already added up to $750K and counting.

- Again, we're involved in a debate with City Hall about attendance . . . Supporters tout big numbers but there's so much proof which reveals sparse crowds and lackluster interest overall.

Buried in the article we linked above . . . A note about "Open Spaces" concert FAIL . . .

"Attendance was much lower than hoped for at the 8,000-seat outdoor venue; only a couple hundred fans showed up for the opening-night performance by The Roots."

One day later Kansas City native Janelle Monae performed for the same venue that was more than half empty.

It gets worse . . .

In 2015, Kansas City Mayor Sly James created the Office of Culture and Creative Services and brought in an expert from Austin, Tx. Since that time very few people at City Hall have been able to decipher what exactly Megan Crigger does to justify her $100K+ salary.

Now . . .

To be fair, the newsie who filed this latest report tried to be objective . . . People don't really want to hear critical discourse on public radio that's mostly intended for polite whispers whilst progressives drink tea. We don't wanna hate on the newsie for her efforts, she has performed valuable work in filing this report which is nearly as useful as when she once served as a guide for Walt Bodine through his last broadcasts . . .

However . . .

From our view, Open Spaces wasted nearly ONE MILLION BUCKS worth of Kansas City taxpayer cash and local media has been mostly silent about the travesty and sketchy accounting in the aftermath of one of the greatest artistic flop this town has ever witnessed.

  1. Some of the exhibits were really nice and did draw good crowds. The Swope Park swimming pool was one of the best.

I think we need to also account for the great publicity that KC received and some of the funding that will help our artistic community as well.

  5. Give thanks where it belongs, and that is with the moron liberals in this city who are the ones to blame. This is your Go Bond Money at work.

Search Jackson County records to see how much money is going into this crap from the so called infrastructure money aka Go Bond! The house across from the Nelson Gallery (Nelson's daughters house) is unlivable and in disrepair, was on the market for low 200k got a raise in taxes of over 800k due to the go Bond! Those taxes should have gone down not up. So to all of the people who support this theft from the current city admin. need to shut up and suck it up. You have no right to complain. Voting has consequences!

Fortunately, this will be the last "Open Spaces", when the $1 Million City deficit becomes public. Keep an eye out. Slie and Troy will try to hide the money.

  35. The failure of Open Spaces (and make no mistake, it was a failure) is not the Mayor's. It belongs solely at the feet of the Director of the Office of Culture and Creative Services, Megan Crigger. She had three years to plan and execute this event, and hired two event planning companies for assistance in addition to the infamous Dan Cameron (the 1/4 Million Dollar Man). She is a well-paid employee, more than $110k per year at least, and has staff. Plenty of City employees accomplish a lot more with fewer or no staff and a lot less pay. Then just a few days before Open Spaces starts, Crigger takes off for several weeks. Unprofessional and incompetent. Open Spaces was doomed before it began. Someone's head should roll over this debacle.
