Comedy Club Of Kansas City Hopes To Revive Classic Southland Watts Mill Theater

In his latest post, Kansas City comedian Dustin Kaufman offered details and perspective on his new project that has a great many local performers excited about a new venue arising from a beloved old school KC spot . . .

Checkit:

"The club will simply be called “The Comedy Club of Kansas City.” In order to be called “The Comedy Club of Kansas City” we had to find a location that connects the entire city and we truly believe we found it. There was a big discussion on where we should put the club. Westport was mentioned several times and we looked at a lot of spaces down there. I considered downtown Overland Park and there was even a great spot in Waldo. Heck, I even went to go look at the old club at Legends for Shoots and Giggles, but at the end of the day it was none of those. The club will be located in the Watts Mill Shopping Center at 103rd and State Line one block north of 435. 1130 W 103rd St KCMO 64114 . . .

"There’s a lot of people who don’t want to go to Westport these days, but I’ve never heard anybody refuse to go to Watts Mill. We are actually in the old Watts Mill Theater. The building has been split up over the years, but the front doors to the theater will be our front doors as well. My grandma used to take me to the Watts Mill theater as a child. I remember her taking me to see Bambi. After the theater closed this space turned into Waid’s which happened to be one of our favorite places to eat and boy that cheese soup. This space has been a part of me my entire life. It’s special to me, I know it would have been special to my grandma and hopefully it will be special for you too . . ."

  1. Loved Watts Mill, it was at its best when it was a dollar theater place and you could take your family to the movies for less than 10 bucks. Glad to see something is becoming of it. He's a little bit above the Floodplain and I have seen some improvements in that area. Best of luck to Dustin!

  2. If he can get the owners to put in some more lights in the parking lot, that will probably help is business immensely.

  3. It’s dark enough in that area now and a comedy club will just make it darker.

  4. You know what's funny about all of this........nothing!

  5. Opening a KKK office in east KC would have more success than The Comedy Club of KC. Less than a year and they will shut down unless Dustin has a secret pile of inherited family money that can pay the bills.
